Why I Used to Think Mediums are Evil - and Why I Was Completely Wrong

Growing up in a Pentecostal household, I was taught that anything beyond our physical realm was ignored or even prohibited. Mediumship was regarded as a dark path, filled with spirits that could trick the unprepared. Messages from beyond were not only discouraged but feared. This view was reinforced by numerous sermons predicting dire consequences for those who dared to connect with the spirit world. However, my transition into Catholicism and my years exploring spirituality revealed a truth that challenged my early beliefs. Mediumship is not a destination of darkness; it is often a source of love, illuminating the eternal connections we share with those we have lost.

In this article, I aim to uncover the misunderstood practice of mediumship and explain how embracing it can enrich our spiritual lives and deepen our connections.

The Early Conditioning: Fear of the Unknown & the Belief that "Mediums are Evil"

As a child, I was surrounded by narratives that painted mediumship in a negative light. Pastors spoke fervently about hell and evil spirits, urging us to avoid anything perceived as supernatural. The fear was based on a cautionary framework rather than evidence. This resulted in a lingering aversion to the spiritual world; I developed a mindset that equated mediumship with danger and deceit.

Such fears were not unfounded in my upbringing. Many people still believe that interacting with a medium could invite chaos into their lives, a notion I once accepted without question. The dark figures I envisioned lurking beyond the veil were merely extensions of this fear. Avoiding any connection to this unknown realm felt like self-preservation.

But whether we acknowledge it or not, fear can distort our perception and limit our experiences.

Exploring Catholicism: A New Perspective

Shifting to Catholicism offered me a different framework through which to examine my spirituality. While the Catholic Church maintains a cautious stance toward mediumship, it simultaneously celebrates the communion of saints and the unique connections we have with those who have passed on.

Catholics often turn to saints for guidance and support, highlighting the understanding that life transcends our earthly experiences. Rather than viewing connections across realms as risks, I gradually recognized them as potential sources of comfort and strength.

This transformative perspective slowly undermined my previous fears surrounding mediumship.

Bonds That Never Die

One of the most powerful realizations from my spiritual journey is that love transcends even death. The bonds we share with our loved ones do not vanish when they are no longer physically present—they endure. Mediumship acts as a bridge, helping us reconnect with those lost to us.

In one of my early sessions, I heard messages that were specific and insightful, reaffirming that my loved ones were indeed with me, albeit in a different form. These messages offered hope and connection, serving not as harbingers of darkness but as affirmations of love. Many mediums emphasize that they serve as conduits for these loving messages, focusing on healing and closure rather than summoning malevolent forces.

The experience confirmed that our connections may transform but never truly diminish.

Demystifying Mediumship

Let's clear up some common misconceptions surrounding mediumship.

1. Mediumship is Not About Predicting the Future

While psychics delve into prophecy, mediums focus primarily on relaying messages from the deceased. This practice is rooted in love and healing. Misconceptions often arise from a belief that mediums are fortune tellers; this is simply not the case.

2. Mediumship Requires Respect and Responsibility

Reputable mediums practice with profound respect for their gifts. They aim to comfort those in grief, positioning themselves more as spiritual advisors than entertainers. They navigate deeply emotional landscapes, often providing valuable insights and encouragement.

Understanding these points can significantly shift how we perceive mediumship and its role in our lives.

The Science of Connection

Some may dismiss mediumship as a mere product of wishful thinking or unresolved grief. However, numerous studies challenge this view. For example, a 2010 study by the Journal of the Society for Psychical Research found that 80% of participants reported profound feelings of healing after connecting with a medium.

These findings raise an important question: Can consciousness exist beyond death? Though the debate continues, the experiences many have shared reflect feelings of comfort and reassurance—both vital for those enduring grief.

By adopting a broader view, we can understand mediumship as more than just a practice; it becomes a significant emotional experience.

Finding Healing Through Mediumship

For many, mediumship serves as a source of catharsis. Grieving individuals often find solace in messages that help ease their emotional turmoil. Hearing specific details known only to departed loved ones can foster feelings of peace and closure.

Healing doesn't always arrive in traditional forms. Mediumship may facilitate understanding, helping us process grief in ways we never anticipated. Numerous individuals have shared stories of feeling lighter and more at peace after mediumship sessions.

Personal Experiences with Mediums

Curiosity prompted me to explore mediumship further. I joined a group session led by a medium who connected with spirits of loved ones present in the room. My initial hesitation dissipated when the medium conveyed specific stories and emotions from my past.

Tears flowed freely as I felt a strong presence from my grandmother, her warmth evident. This experience shattered my preconceived ideas and revealed that I was not engaging with evil forces but reconnecting through love and understanding.

The Shift: From Skepticism to Openness

These sessions helped peel back layers of skepticism that had tightly bound my beliefs. This newfound open-mindedness was liberating; I began to tackle subjects I once avoided, such as spiritual healing and meditation, activities that enriched my life.

Embracing the Light

My exploration into mediumship taught me the importance of positivity. The once-feared dark entities began to feel more like myths born of collective anxiety.

Choosing to embrace the light became an active decision. Connecting with reputable mediums revealed a commitment to compassion, empathy, and respect for the sacred nature of existence.

The journey of connection ultimately allowed me to celebrate one of the most profound aspects of our humanity: our capacity for love that extends beyond the constraints of our earthly lives.

A Farewell to Fear

Reflecting on my journey from fear-based beliefs to an understanding heart, I can affirm that mediums are not evil. Instead, they serve as compassionate conduits for healing, connection, and love.

My early conditioning may have shackled me with anxiety, but my experiences opened my eyes to the beauty of relationships that transcend life and death. As we cultivate a mindset that embraces the unknown, we ground ourselves in love and understanding. By moving away from fear, we can discover a world rich with wonder and possibility.

As we continue to evolve, let us celebrate the journey of interconnectedness rather than retreat into fear. Mediums can illuminate paths for those seeking solace and love amidst their grief, reminding us that the bonds we create with our loved ones never truly die.
